Three killed as Bus falls into Godavari river near Bhadrachalam

At least three people were killed and 30 sustained injuries on Thursday when a bus fell into River Godavari in Bhadrachalam, Khammam district of Telangana.

The accident occurred around noon when the state-owned Road Transport Corporation (RTC) bus with 40 passengers, fell off a bridge. The bus driver lost control of the vehicle while driving it up the steep bridge and the vehicle fell into the river. The crowded bus landed on the dried up bed of the river. The local fishermen rushed to the area after hearing cries for help and tried to rescue the trapped passengers from the damaged bus.

The injured passengers have been rushed to a hospital in Bhadrachalam area. The toll may go up as the condition of some of the injured is said to be critical. The bus was going to Bhadrachalam from Khammam town. The police have registered a case against driver and collected his blood samples to ascertain if he is driving under the influence of alcohol.

Telangana CM KCR expressed shock at the accident and directed the district collector to ensure the injured get best medical care. Telangana’s Transport Minister Mahender Reddy has ordered a probe into the horrific bus crash.
